St Kilda Nude Photo Scandal - Athletes Are Slow Learners

Naked Olympics - St Kilda nude photo

Another day and another scandal involving footy players hits the news. Why are footy players and athletes so slow to learn that photos in awkward situations and social media is a bad recipe??

The last big scandal was former Australian and New South Wales rugby league representative Joel Monaghan making a dogs breakfast of the Canberra Raiders Mad Monday celebrations. He had to quit the club.

Today, it was Saint Kilda AFL stars Nick Riewoldt, Zac Dawson and Nick Dal Santo allegedly being featured in nude and what has been described in the media as explicit photographs. The photos were posted on a Facebook profile of a girl that allegedly first met the players at a high school visit. This has all the makings of a really bad and career ending story for the St Kilda players.

It is a fair bet that the photos were real as St Kilda took legal action this afternoon in the Federal Court in Melbourne to get a court order to have the photos taken down off the Facebook profile. Not an action that would have been taken if the photos were of someone else....St Kilda have also issued a statement saying they are working with Victorian Police on the matter.

I’m not going to judge the players for their sexual habits or judge the girl involved. They are consenting adults so can please themselves and anyone else present if they feel the need. There are no allegations of sexual assault in this case unlike allegations from the Collingwood incident earlier in the year or even the case involving most of the Cronulla Sharks team in the NRL while they toured New Zealand years back.

I have to question the intelligence of people that after all of the negative media attention surrounding lewd and unsavoury photographs from footy players of all codes and athletes in other sports would manage to get themselves in similar situations.

Unless you could somehow travel back in time and compete in the Olympics or Panhellenic Games in ancient Greece or are competing in modern day nude Olympics, it is not a good decision to get your gear off in public if you are an athlete as chances are it will backfire big time!!

Professional athletes have special training on safe alcohol consumption, the power of social media and acceptable behaviour towards women – do these high profile adults really need a special course to teach them that getting blotto and having photos taken of you nude or in lewd positions is dangerous to their career?? Fairdinkum!!

It is not just males that get themselves into strife. These St Kilda players follow many other athletes including Aussie swimming queen Stephanie Rice. It does happen to females too.

Twitter and Facebook have led to dramas for heaps of athletes. So why do individuals think it won’t happen to them??

Perhaps Albert Einstein was right when he said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results!!
