Good Luck Matildas - FIFA Women's World Cup 2011

The Mad Chatter - Monday, June 27, 2011
Sam Kerr from the Matildas

It is time all of us Aussie sporting nuts begin to support the Matildas, the Australian women's football team, at the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Didn't know it was on I hear you say.... Well it hasn't been well publicised in Australian media but that isn't the fault of the 21 players and their support staff currently in Germany preparing to represent their nation. The Matildas take on Brazil in their first match on 29 June, then Equatorial Guinea and Norway in their group matches.

They are in awesome form too!! They beat Mexico 3-2 and England 2-0 in their latest warm up matches. The squad is younger than previous World Cups but according to 119 international match veteran and Aussie representative since 1999 Heather Garriock, the 2011 Matildas are looking to score plenty of goals.

"It's an exciting brand of football - it's probably the best football I've been involved with in the national team ever."

Scoring goals wont be the only excitement for the Matildas. Ticket sales for the Women's World Cup in Germany have been unbelievable and it is likely the Aussies will be playing in front of crowds of over 30,000. For some of the Matildas, they will be playing in front of the biggest crowds in their careers.

Paul the Octopus died in October after the last FIFA World Cup and wouldn't you know it - Paula the Octopus has sprung up and is now tipping for the FIFA Women's World Cup. However, Paula isn't as lucky as Paul. She already has lost some tips so I doubt whether we'll be calling her an Oracle like we did for Paul!!

SBS Television most be congratulated for ongoing support to football in Australia and especially for the support of the Matildas. The Matildas begin their campaign with their opening match against world number 3 Brazil on June 29 (June 30, 2.15am AEST SBS ONE), before playing Equatorial Guinea on July 3 (10pm AEST SBS TWO) and Norway on July 6 (July 7, 2am AEST SBS ONE).

The Mad Chatter will be keeping a close eye on the FIFA Women's World Cup and letting you know all about the Matildas.
