Five State of Origin Facts for Game III (3) in 2011

The Mad Chatter - Tuesday, July 05, 2011

Darren LockyerThere is no doubt that the deciding Game III match of the 2011 State of Origin series is the most important since it began in 1980. With all the hype of potentially a record breaking sixth series wins for the Maroons, and a fitting farewell win for Queensland champion Darren Lockyer on offer, I thought I'd provide some quick State of Origin facts to help you with the conversations around the water cooler or at the pub tomorrow.

The NSW Blues are out to spoil the fairytale end for Lockyer and regain their Origin credibility. Who will win - God only knows!!  So here are the five quick facts and make sure to share them with your mates.

Fact 1:

If the Queensland Maroons win Game III, Darren Lockyer will leave Origin football with 19 wins in the Maroons jumper. This equals King Wally Lewis' record. Does this mean Lockyer truly is the prince?

Fact 2:

Only five times in 29 years have either side won the decider on opposition soil. Queensland achieved this at the SCG in 1982 (the first year a three-game series was played), at the Sydney Football Stadium (SFS) in 1998 (Lockyer’s debut year) and at ANZ Stadium in 2008.

New South Wales beat the odds and the Queenslanders at Suncorp Stadium in 1994 and again in 2005.

Fact 3:

The Blues have only won the series twice after losing Game I. This was also in 1994 and 2005 at Suncorp Stadium.

Fact 4:

Since the birth of Origin, 92 matches have been played. Queensland Maroons have won 48 and NSW Blues 42. Two have been drawn. (stats from NRL)

Fact 5:

If it wasn't for Billy Slater's Game I try in the final moments, Game III could have been a dead rubber. That is how close the teams have been in this series. Only a few points in it.

So who will win??
