Bird's Test Jumper May Fly South

Greg Bird in happier times

Australian, NSW State of Origin and Cronulla Sharks five-eighth Greg Bird’s latest blunder will probably cost him a chance of representing Australia in the upcoming World Cup and may see him deregistered from the NRL. With Canberra Raiders Terry Campese blitzing the competition, he deserves to get the nod from Australian selectors.

Bird was charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on Sunday (24 August 2008) by NSW Police for allegedly assaulting his girl friend Katie Milligan with a glass. Milligan required serious facial surgery to repair a fractured eye socket and medical staff at one stage held fears that the sight in one eye may be permanently damaged.

This latest incident comes after other controversies involving Bird. He was involved in an incident with Qld Police during the State of Origin series and he has also been charged for assault previously.

The Cronulla Sharks made the correct decision to stand Bird down indefinitely. His alleged behaviour cannot be tolerated and it is likely that if convicted his $350,000 a year contract will be torn up. Bird spent the night in police custody and was granted strict conditional bail which included a $5000 surety and terms that he must not approach or contact Milligan or other witnesses in the case.

To make matters worse for Bird, it was alleged in court that he tried to shift the blame to his housemate. Information tendered in court suggested Bird sent text messages to his housemate trying to convince him to take the blame for glassing Milligan. This is not only stupid but just demonstrates the lack of remorse for his actions. His main concern was for his rugby league future and not the health or welfare of his girlfriend, or soon to be ex-girlfriend I presume.

This latest scandal in the NRL comes after Todd Carney was stood down for another alcohol related blunder and the controversies surrounding the exodus of players to rugby union.

This pitiful behaviour of players on the drink makes me mad and I’m sure makes all Sharks supporters furious. Cronulla have never won a grand final since entering the competition in 1967. 2008 was looking favourable for their inaugural premiership. However, with one stupid act, their main play maker is out for the year and it has left their grand final aspirations in tatters.

If I was an Australian selector, I would have already scrapped Bird’s name from the World Cup squad and reward a player that deserves to represent Australia.

Canberra Raiders five eighth Terry Campese has set the NRL on fire in recent weeks and deserves an opportunity. He is a point scoring machine, has an exception kicking game and is guiding the Raiders to a potential top four finish.
